LINX to Launch in August

Simcoe County | by Ken Hashizume
The new regional transit service will see buses operate between Penetanguishene and Barrie.

People will soon be able to go from Kempenfelt Bay to Georgian Bay by bus.

Members of simcoe County Council and staff were on hand for Tuesday's announcement of the new LINX Regional Transit Service.

The first route will see buses go to and from Barrie and Penetanguishene with stops in Midhurst, Elmvale, Waverley, Wyebridge, and Midland starting Tuesday August 7th.

Four other routes are in the works (Barrie-Orillia, Midland-Orillia, Alliston-Bradford, and Barrie-Collingwood) plus the County will assume operations of existing inter-municipal routes.

The plan is to have all the routes rolled out in five years.

County Warden Gerry Marshall calls the new regional transit service a "game changer" and says it's changing the conversation about public transportation.

He says soon Lakehead University students living in Barrie can take the bus up to Orillia where that opportunity never existed before.

Marshall says there will be a smartphone app that will allow riders to access schedules and be able to track where the buses are.

He says people waiting at the bus stop can know when the next bus will be arriving.

County Council approved a 5-year, $5 Million plan last August to launch a regional transit service.

Marshall says Council first bought into the idea of having such a service.

He says they then asked staff to come up with a plan within that budget figure and this is what has come out of it.

As part of the launch, rides between August 7 and September 4 are free.

Cash fares for the new LINX bus service will be $2, $4, or $6 depending on distance traveled starting September 5th.

There will be four 30-foot buses on the initial route each with a capacity to carry up to 32 passengers and two wheelchairs.

Service will operate Monday to Friday between 6 AM and 7:30 PM.
